Welcome to the cutting-edge of uphill cycling
and world's most famous ascents of each of the continents
The highest mountain in Latvia is located right in the centre of the country and reaches a height of 312m. This makes it just below the highest point in the entire Baltic region in Estonia.
Start: Madona 134m
Only the last few metres are a little more challenging.
We start in the village with the beautiful name of Madona.
The shortest route actually leads to the destination via a gravel track. I therefore prefer to take the longer road. However, this is so unpleasantly busy and fast that you are repeatedly forced into the gravel on the hard shoulder. You might as well have chosen the much shorter gravel track.
After 10 long kilometres on the hard shoulder, you reach the turn-off towards Gaizinkalns.
This is where the real gravel track starts. Good to ride on a gravel bike.
Deserted area
Idyllic signs of civilisation just before the destination
Left to the summit, right to the ski lift?!
The last few metres up here
The summit stone is reached.
Wooden monument and Latvian flag on the summit
The next day we climb Lithuania's highest mountain.
