Welcome to the cutting-edge of uphill cycling
and world's most famous ascents of each of the continents
Gaviapass belongs scenically to the absolute highlights of the Alps. Thereof you have to accept the cumbersome journey via Passo Tonale (likely most shabby pass of the Alps). Southern ramp of Gavia shows partly a grade of 16% on a very narrow roadway. Additionally, you should be aware of a pitch-black tunnel close below the summit.
Start: South of village St. Apollonia 1,500m
At an altitude level of approx. 1,700m the 16%-ramp begins, afterwards it becomes more conveniant on the way to the summit. The elevation profile includes the return way.
You do not need any Italian language skills: Great serpentines, but partly severe road conditions.
Very narrow roadway with hardly visible switchbacks
The tunnel has some 800m and is pitch dark. You may alternatively push your bike on the old road alongside the tunnel.
Lago Nero close to the summit in great landscape.
