Welcome to the cutting-edge of uphill cycling
and world's most famous ascents of each of the continents
The highest roads in North Macedonia are actually in the north of the country near the ski resorts of Tetovo on the border with Kosovo. There is also the attractive Galičica Saddle in the far south on the immediate border with Albania, which connects the two huge inland waterways of Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa.
Start: Tushemisht 695m
Moderate ascent over a length of around 22 kilometres.
We start today on the Albanian side on the shore of Lake Ohrid in perfect weather. The crest at the back of the ridge is today's destination.
For the first time I'm crossing the border between two non-EU countries on my bike - including passport control and customs. There's nothing going on here at all at the beginning of October. They let me across without any problems (and back again later).
Shortly after the border, things get strange: Cyrillic writing next to the usual letters.
Alone on a beautiful road
I have no idea what the signs mean. In any case, nothing special happened for the next 5 metres.
View down to Lake Ohrid, the largest lake in Europe.
The entrance to Galičica National Park has been reached. Cars have to stop, bicycles are allowed through without a toll.
There are only very few hairpin bends.
You slowly but steadily gain altitude.
The Macedonian village of Trpejca down at the lake shore, with Albania to the left and opposite.
Shortly before the saddle height. The highest point here is on the side of Lake Ohrid.
After the bend at the highest point, you reach a small plateau. At the back you can see an unpaved road that leads up to the Signoj peak at an altitude of almost 2,000 metres and is probably passable by mountain bike. The pass road continues behind on the right towards Lake Prespa.
A little further on, at a small car park, you reach today's destination with this pass sign.
