Welcome to the cutting-edge of uphill cycling
and world's most famous ascents of each of the continents
The highest mountain in the Baltic States is located in south-east Estonia. Suur Munamägi reaches a height of 318 metres and can be easily reached by bike. Only the last few metres up to the viewing tower on the summit are a little challenging.
Start: Vöru 84m
The harmless profile shows a challenging climb at the very end.
Start in the centre of the village of Vöru
We head out of the village on a nice cycle path towards the Haanja mountain range.
Little traffic on the road towards the destination
Unfortunately, there is fresh tarmac work on my side of the road. Then it starts to drizzle.
The mixture is disastrous. The tyre crunches on the damp road surface and 1km before the finish it happens as it must...
The front tyre can no longer cope with the ordeal. Flat. Already the second flat tyre on this bike (last time in Montenegro).
After a short repair, we continue to this turn-off from the road. It's a little hidden up here. A little further straight ahead, you would have reached a signposted car park for hikers.
This is the end of the road for cars. Cyclists can pass.
The short section to the summit is quite steep, but easy to cycle.
And then you have reached the viewing tower. This marks the highest peak in the entire Baltic region.
The next day we head up the highest mountain in Latvia.
